FAQ
Short answers to common questions, each linking to the fuller guide.
How do I install TabSlate?
From the Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Edge Add-ons, or Firefox Add-ons, or by building it from source. See Install TabSlate.
Do I need an account to use TabSlate?
No. TabSlate works fully as a guest, with everything saved locally on your device — nothing is hidden or read-only compared to a signed-in account. An account is only needed if you want your workspace synced across devices. See Guest and Verified Accounts.
Can I run my own server instead of using TabSlate Cloud?
Yes. TabSlate Server is the same backend that powers TabSlate Cloud, released separately as free, self-hostable software under AGPL-3.0. See Self-hosting for what that involves and what you take on by running it yourself.
Which browsers does TabSlate support?
Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Firefox (142 or later). There is currently no Safari version. See Install TabSlate.
What permissions does TabSlate need, and why?
A short, fixed set for reading and organizing your tabs, groups, and bookmarks, plus one optional permission that powers the global search overlay. None of them are used to read the content of the pages you visit. See Browser Permissions.
I registered but I'm stuck on the verification step. What do I do?
Look for the six-digit code TabSlate emailed you, request another once the cooldown ends if it never arrived, or use Use a different account on the code-entry screen if you registered with the wrong email. See Guest and Verified Accounts.
Why isn't my data syncing?
Sync only runs once you have a verified account, a signed-in session, a server URL configured, and a live connection. The sidebar's sync status shows what's currently happening — idle, syncing, an error, or offline. See Cloud Sync and Offline Behavior.
I deleted something. Can I get it back?
If it's still in Archive or Trash, yes — both support Restore. Once something is removed permanently from Trash, or with Empty Trash, it's gone for good and cannot be undone. Guest-workspace data that was never connected to a verified account has no separate backup at all, so reinstalling or clearing local browser data removes it the same way. See Archive & Trash and Guest and Verified Accounts.
Where do I report a bug or request a feature?
For the browser extension, open an issue on TabSlate's GitHub repository. For a self-hosted instance, use TabSlate Server's repository instead — see Troubleshooting for checks to run first.
